Essays That Worked
Essays That Worked The single most important part of your essay preparation may be simply making sure you truly understand the question or essay prompt. When you're finished writing, you need to make sure that your essay still adheres to the prompt. This helps keep the tone meaningful and serious rather than flippant. My Dad, a retired Navy pilot, was away half the time. When he was home, he had a parenting style something like a drill sergeant. At the age of nine, I learned how to clear burning oil from the surface of water. My Dad considered this a critical life skillâ"you know, in case my aircraft carrier should ever get torpedoed. Let your essay sit for a while before you proofread it. Approaching the essay with a fresh perspective gives your mind a chance to focus on the actual words rather than seeing what you think you wrote. Start with your main idea and follow it from beginning to end. All good stories have a beginning, a middle, and an end, so shape your story so that it has an introduction, body, and conclusion. Following this natural progression will make your essay coherent and easy to read. Avoid sorting through your existing English class essays to see if the topics fit the bill. These pieces rarely showcase who you are as an applicant. This approach also diffuses the potential discomfort of the reader with his father's strictnessâ"since he is making jokes about it, clearly he is OK. Notice, though, that this doesn't occur very much in the essay. Heavenly Essays by Janine W. Robinsonâ"This collection from the popular blogger behind Essay Hell includes a wider range of schools, as well as helpful tips on honing your own essay. These essays are answers to past prompts from either the Common Application or the Universal Application, both of which Johns Hopkins accepts. You'll see a similar structure in many of the essays. Growing up in the uniformly flat state of Florida, I was limited in my upward journey. Luckily, I rekindled my love for climbing in high school, and now cannot imagine life without it. Take time to understand the question or prompt being asked. The duality of the periodic tableâ"the cold, hard numbers mixed with the reassuring, steadfast patternsâ"has manifested itself in every aspect of my life. The world of coding presented itself to me as a way to bring the patterns I loved into the world in a way I could see them. I grew up scaling the tallest trees I could find, desiring the highest vantage point. CollegeXpress has everything you need to simplify your college search, get connected to schools, and find your perfect fit. This forces you to read each word individually and increases your chances of finding a typo. Reading aloud will also help you ensure your punctuation is correct, and itâs often easier to hear awkward sentences than see them. The rules for writing a good essay are no different. After you brainstorm, youâll know what you want to say, but you must decide how youâre going to say it. Create an outline that breaks down the essay into sections. The author starts with a very detailed story of an event or description of a person or place. Stellar Results We help 95% our students get into at least one of their top 3 choices.
Academic Essay Writers That Writes Essays For You
Academic Essay Writers That Writes Essays For You For as long as I can remember, baking has been an integral part of my life. Thanks to busy parents and hungry siblings, I was encouraged to cook from a relatively young age. I feel like I should feel disturbed, but Iâm not. I read the last page and close the book, staring out the window at the shining fish ponds and peaceful rice paddies. I feel like a speck of dust outside the train, floating, content and happy to be between destinations. The idea I settled on was my Asian-American identity, but how I wrote about this broad idea really evolved through my drafts. I chose to write about it because it was so integral to my identity through my extracurriculars and my experiences growing up as an Asian immigrant in the American South. Beyond the hook, you will want a successful thesis statement that you work into your introduction to establish your main idea which will run throughout the essay. Knowing the topic wonât differentiate you, it has to be something else, right? And like the list of extra-curricular activities, it needs to be clear in the first sentence or two. I know many readers who read the first and last paragraphs and only go back if those are compelling. Otherwise, itâs a dime a dozen and the ratings are accordingly average. My point is that your energy should not be spent on selecting the topic. Once you figure out which question you want to answer, meaning you really have something to say or youâre somewhat excited to respond, start writing. It is the summer of 2012, and Shanghai isnât to be home for much longer. In another week I will cross the globe to start a new life in a foreign land called Charlotte. Luckily, I board my train with seconds to spare, and without being turned into a pancake â" always a plus. My poem told my story, beginning with rosy-cheeked five-year-old me landing in America on a snowy night and rubbing my eyes in awe of the whiteness covering the new world. Then, as an excited six-year-old starting school, I became self-conscious of how different I was when an intrepid boy welcomed me, âNi Hao,â his butchered pronunciation tinged with contempt. When I was eleven and received a 100 on a math test, my pride and hard work were stomped on by my classmates exclaiming, âItâs because youâre Asian! â At thirteen, I was caught between my Peranakan roots and American upbringing, unable to understand the idea of being both Asian and American. After a decade of living in America, I donât understand why Iâm still a foreigner. To check out her drafts and writing notes, click here. At Tech we focus on our motto of Progress and Service and improving the human condition. Teachers, friends and parents can all be helpful proofreaders, but experts note that the student voice should remain intact. Everything I could ever want to know and more is right at my fingertips. From the change in weight I feel in a moving elevator, to the chemical reactions that cause the plastic stars in my room to glow, science is a field that permeates every single aspect of life. Students applying to us will see questions along those lines, or should be astute enough to find opportunities to provide connections to those concepts. Every school has these, you just have to dig deeper at some places. Then we talked about his supplemental responses. It has been my experience that the way to ANYONEâS heart is through the stomach. The time that I spend in my kitchen, the effort and care that I pour into my confectionary creations, is a labor of love that brings me just as much satisfaction as it does my hungry friends and family. Conquer The College Essay
Conquer The College Essay This may be your only chance to address an admissions officer directly. Theyâre going to turn down lots of highly qualified applicants, so your essay could be critical if the choice comes down to you and another, similarly qualified applicant. That said, your essay probably wonât actually hurt you as long as itâs reasonably literate . Such candidates, regardless of their credentials, are not very compelling and are easily dismissed. Admission officers want to get past the facts of your application to better understand how you think. How do you process information about yourself and the world around you? Your essay should reveal how and why have they shaped you. College professors donât want to have to teach you how to write. From a technical point of view, then, your essay should reveal that you have good command of the language, understand the rules of grammar and can convey ideas concisely. Ask them to read the essay and then respond with three adjectives that describe you and a sentence that captures what they learned. Does it reflect the message you hoped to convey? Students donât need to stick to the 5-paragraph model that theyâve used so often in school. You can have a good essay that has 2 or 10 paragraphs, or includes a good amount of dialogue. If youâre ever going to name drop, this is the place to do it. Mention specific names of people, buildings, societies, clubs, and more. Although they're phrased differently from college to college, certain essay question types appear routinely. We asked the admission staff to select some of their favorite essays. We hope they will provide inspiration as you craft your stories. An essay that is presented in a few long paragraphs is not only hard to readâ"the resulting word âblocksâ can be overwhelming to tired eyesâ"it effectively obscures the authorâs key messages. And rememberâ"a one line, one sentence paragraph can be more impactful than a 3-4 sentence paragraph. Write the story that you want to express and then choose the prompt with which it best aligns. If all else fails you can default to the last prompt, which is essentially topic of your choice. As always, be as specific as possible, and pay attention to the writing itself, not just the content. This is a story about you and your connection to the school â" not just a list of reasons. Letâs start with mistakes to avoid when writing your essay. Donât restate information that can be found elsewhere in your application. This is your opportunity to provide insight and interpretation. Essays that become travelogues or resume narratives have little value to the reader and are wasted space. Admissions officers are seeking students who are purposeful in their pursuits when choosing among highly talented students. They see a ton of candidates who are drawn by the fame or prestige of their institutionsâ"who are simply applying to see if they can get in. DONâT rehash information that is already in your application. The goal of your essay should not be something like âto show Iâm co-captain of the soccer team.â They already know that; you need to tell them something new. When you have finished a draft of your essay, read it over and ask yourself why you wrote it. If you cannot answer this question, you might not be going deep enough or painting a vivid picture of who you are and what is important to you. Most conformists will stifle their unique voice by attempting to respond to the specific prompts that the Common Application provides. What results is often a generic statement that lacks energy or personality.
College App Essay
College App Essay Imagine that each different part of you is a bead and that a select few will show up in your essay. Theyâre not the kind of beads youâd find on a store-bought bracelet; theyâre more like the hand-painted beads on a bracelet your little brother made for you. Help the reader understand which experiences have shaped the qualities youâve listed. First, itâll make for a much more interesting story; second, itâll show that youâve truly developed these qualities. Go to a college's website and click on a major or group of majors that interest you. Sometimes theyâll briefly summarize a major in terms of what skills it will impart or what jobs it might lead to. This is a great way to figure out the âbonesâ (i.e. structure) of your essay. A rectangular black and red sticker displaying the theme of the 2017 event. Students are often surprised to discover how broadly major-related skills can apply. But if you choose this path, youâll likely need to use either an uncommon structure or next-level craft to create a stand-out essay. While this sounds simple, the quality of your essay will depend on the strength of your examples and your insights. â Youâre hunting together for a thematic thread--something that might connect different parts of your life and self. And, as I write these things down, I notice a theme of youth/old age emerging. Note that I couldnât come up with something for the last one, âknowledge,â which is fine. Read her essay below, then Iâll share more about how you can find your own thematic thread. I am a diehard Duke basketball fan, and I can identify all of the Duke basketball fans at my high school on one hand. Iâve gotten different Myers-Briggs personality types every time I took the test. I became a pescatarian this year to avoid fried chicken, and I can honestly get a lifeâs worth of meat out of cod, salmon, tilapia, shrimp, you name it. The theme of your essay is the thread that connects your beads. As with the Type A essay, complete the brainstorming exercises described at the start of this chapter. No matter which structure you choose, these exercises help. Take special care to complete the Feelings and Needs Exercise, as it can be a powerful essay-outlining tool. Next, the author used the Narrative Structure to give shape to his essay. First, the author brainstormed the content of his essay using the Feelings and Needs Exercise. I became as independent as I could to lessen the time and money mom had to spend raising me. Living without a father meant money was tight, mom worked two jobs, and my brother and I took care of each other when she worked. For a brief period of time the quality of our lives slowly started to improve as our soon-to-be step-dad became an integral part of our family. He paid attention to the needs of my mom, my brother, and me. For years Iâve been interested in the street artists and musicians in downtown Austin who are so unapologetically themselves. As a result, Iâve become more open-minded and appreciative of unconventional lifestyles. TED gives me the opportunity to help other youth understand new perspectives, by exposing them to the diversity of Austin where culture is created, not just consumed. Once youâve written down your qualities, examples, and at least 1-2 insights, try outlining your essay. To keep things simple, one example and one insight per paragraph. Without a father figure to teach me the things a father could, I became my own teacher. I learned how to fix a bike, how to swim, and even how to talk to girls. I became resourceful, fixing shoes with strips of duct tape, and I even found a job to help pay bills. But our prosperity was short-lived as my step dadâs chronic alcoholism became more and more recurrent. When I was eight, my younger brother Fernandoâs birth complicated things even further. As my step-dad slipped away, my mom continued working, and Fernandoâs care was left to Jose and me. I cooked, Jose cleaned, I dressed Fernando, Jose put him to bed.

Once you have your first draft, you can move on to the revision process. While I did homework, I nervously awaited my dadâs return; he had always been a tyrant. If he entered silently, I would know to steer clear. Sit down and write about a project that youâre proud of. Talk about organizing an event or participating in a community service project that opened your eyes. Type up an honest page about someone you admire or the moment you discovered your favorite word or why you donât trust anyone who doesnât like macaroni and cheese. Sometimes we get so wrapped up in the mindset ofthis-must-be-donethat we forget the primary reason for the presence of a personal essay. Vision is the idea that you want to make an impact in your world. Itâs also the idea that you think in terms that transcend the bubble that is your high school, or the horizon that is your current situation. I was a prisoner in my own home and felt like livestock, bred to be a source of income for my parentsâ future comfort. If I failed or proved unpromising, I feared I would be slaughtered. The random movements of my dance perfectly showed the former âbrokennessâ of my life. The relief Bboy had given me that afternoon faded as I came home. It may be career ambition, but it also may be something more abstract, a personal mandate. College want people who are going to change the world. College Essay Essentials
College Essay Essentials Put the reader in medias res, that is, in the middle of things. Place the reader in the middle of something happening or in the middle of a conversation. Suggest that they seek essay advice from teachers who know them well. In other words, when all else is equal between competing applicants, a compelling essay can make the difference. The chicken knows it must escape; it has to get to the other side. The chicken--confused, betrayed, disturbed--slowly lifts its eyes from the now empty ground. For the first time, it looks past the silver fence of the cage and notices an unkempt sweep of colossal brown and green grasses opposite its impeccably crafted surroundings. âAll the food, the nice soft hay, the flawless red barn--maybe all of this isnât worth giving up. She just wants to protect me from losing it all.â The chicken replays the incident again. Other times, we exaggerate even the smallest defects and uncertainties in narratives we donât want to deal with. In a world where we know very little about the nature of âTruth,â itâs very easyâ"and temptingâ"to construct stories around truth claims that unfairly legitimize or delegitimize the games we play. I analyze why I think this essay works in The Complete Guide, Session 6. Frozen in disbelief, the chicken tries to make sense of her harsh words. If there really is no word limit, you can call the school to try to get some guidance. If it's a writing sample of your graded academic work, the length either doesn't matter or there should be some loose page guidelines. If you can truly get your point across well beneath the word limit, it's probably fine. Brevity is not necessarily a bad thing in writing just so long as you are clear, cogent, and communicate what you want to. If you have to copy-paste it into a text box, your essay might get cut off and you'll have to trim down anyways. Like rock-paper-scissors, we tend to accept something not because itâs true, but because itâs the convenient route to getting things accomplished. We accept incomplete narratives when they serve us well, overlooking their logical gaps. That means you should write with voice, that is, you need to write with your own personality. Honesty, humor, talking the way you talk, showing the way you think, all help to create voice. Sometimes even a single word that stands as a paragraph can make the reader wonder and read on. What if you were to take the negative approach to answer the prompt? Maybe you can tell what your hopes are by writing what you do not hope for. If you look at things a little differently from others you stand out. In answering an essay prompt, you need not always do it the most normal way. If there are a lot of mistakes in your essay, it can not be pretty. Maybe you could reveal that in the last sentence of your prompt after telling about all the little things that have some relevance to your area of study. For example, you might describe many natural flora, observe fauna, then list feelings you have about nature to lead up to writing that you want to study biology. College essay prompts usually provide the word limit right in the prompt or in the instructions. I have learned to accept my âambiguityâ as âdiversity,â as a third-culture student embracing both identities in this diverse community that I am blessed to be a part of. Make sure you have spelled everything correctly. If you are on a date, you would naturally want to be smart, funny, nice, caring, unique, not boring. After a decade of living in America, I donât understand why Iâm still a foreigner. To check out her drafts and writing notes, click here.
Help the reader understand which experiences have shaped the qualities youâve listed. First, itâll make for a much more interesting story; second, itâll show that youâve truly developed these qualities.

How To Write The Best College Admissions Essay
How To Write The Best College Admissions Essay When Carol Hathaway, a long time ER nurse, decides to go back to med school and become a doctor, the MDs in the ER treat her very differently. Dr. Kerry Weaver asks her to perform procedures as if she were already a med student. While Carol is uncomfortable with this, she does perform well. Her skill at those procedures seems to make the point that nurses who excel at their profession are as skilled as doctors in some ways. However, later in the episode, when a mother 's young child dies, Carol insists on giving the parent time with the child to grieve, rather than moving her out of the room to make way for incoming patients. That said, I donât like to stand in the way of students motivated to retest. If he has the time and the desire, he could take the ACT again on Feb 8. Dr. Weaver snaps at Carol, telling her that if she is going to go to medical school, she has to stop thinking like a nurse. The implication in Dr. Weaver 's criticism is clear. Nurses worry about the feelings of people, while doctors worry about seeing the next patient or about developing enough distance emotionally so that they can move quickly from one medical crisis to another. Nurses, a profession dominated by women, are the ones who are supposed to soothe over any hurts caused by a too abrupt or too uncaring doctor. My own experiences with hospitals as well as the experiences of friends of mine seem unanimous on this. He shouldnât count on his Writing score making a difference. I donât know of any superscoring school that will not superscore across ACT and ACT with Writing. As you may have read, the essay is becoming less important every year â" even at Duke. If you feel that you would do well or would like to keep all of your options open, then I would encourage you to spend the extra time to take Writing. Either way, it will not hurt your ability to superscore. My son took the ACT without writing as a junior and received a 34 composite . He retook it as a senior with writing and also received a 34 composite , but only received an 8 on the writing portion. Hospitals divide the labor of caring for sick people among the professions, but because the professions are still dominated by certain genders, the division ends up being one of gender more than job title. Although we like to think of the medical profession as increasingly egalitarian, gender divides still run through it. The process by which doctors are socialized into how to be a doctor comes largely through the mentoring process of medical school. Vocational training within the applied sciences tends to be much more about apprenticeship than about theoretical knowledge. Nurses were great, and if you were lucky you got a doctor with a decent bedside manner. But for the most part, the professionals who really looked after loved ones were nurses. The only other difference between the 2 scores is that he got a 36 Reading/35 Science on the first ACT, and 35 Reading/36 Science on the second. For competitive schools that donât require the writing portion, would you recommend that he submit his first score without the writing, or the second? Iâm thinking the first is probably a better choice for him (especially for liberal arts colleges/universities), but wanted to get your thoughts. 8 falls within the 25th-75th range of enrolled students at even Berkeley and UCLA. More important, the UCs are likely to drop the essay requirement this year. Part of this is likely the result of the different roles nurses and doctors play within the hierarchy of the hospital. Depending on how it is that you write, you may use this list in one of two ways. This is something you are familiar with from high school writing. We will be leaving it up, however, until we get clearer guidance from the school. The did say that a single test with an essay is fine. In the same way, you should end your college essay with something that not only summarizes the most important aspects of you but that is also memorable. Memorable endings are poignant, making the reader feel an emotion.
What The #%@!& Should I Write About In My College Essay?
What The #%@!& Should I Write About In My College Essay? The chicken knows it must escape; it has to get to the other side. The chicken--confused, betrayed, disturbed--slowly lifts its eyes from the now empty ground. For the first time, it looks past the silver fence of the cage and notices an unkempt sweep of colossal brown and green grasses opposite its impeccably crafted surroundings. Cautiously, it inches closer to the barrier, farther from the unbelievable perfection of the farm, and discovers a wide sea of black gravel. Suggest that they seek essay advice from teachers who know them well. In other words, when all else is equal between competing applicants, a compelling essay can make the difference. A powerful, well-written essay can also tip the balance for a marginal applicant. If there really is no word limit, you can call the school to try to get some guidance. If it's a writing sample of your graded academic work, the length either doesn't matter or there should be some loose page guidelines. Frozen in disbelief, the chicken tries to make sense of her harsh words. âAll the food, the nice soft hay, the flawless red barn--maybe all of this isnât worth giving up. She just wants to protect me from losing it all.â The chicken replays the incident again. A fissure in the chickenâs unawareness, a plan begins to hatch. Program outcomes vary according to each institutionâs specific program curriculum. If you have to copy-paste it into a text box, your essay might get cut off and you'll have to trim down anyways. The information on this site is for informational and research purposes only and is not an assurance of financial aid. EducationDynamics maintains business relationships with the schools it features. The sources for school statistics and data is the U.S. Department of Education's National Center for Education Statistics and the Integrated Postsecondary Education Data System. ⦠but they all have the common objective of presenting and defending a topic and a stance to the reader. College essay prompts usually provide the word limit right in the prompt or in the instructions. I have learned to accept my âambiguityâ as âdiversity,â as a third-culture student embracing both identities in this diverse community that I am blessed to be a part of. I look around my room, dimly lit by an orange light. A cold December wind wafts a strange infusion of ramen and leftover pizza. On the wall in the far back, a Korean flag hangs besides a Led Zeppelin poster. As with rock-paper-scissors, we often cut our narratives short to make the games we play easier, ignoring the intricate assumptions that keep the game running smoothly. Like rock-paper-scissors, we tend to accept something not because itâs true, but because itâs the convenient route to getting things accomplished. We accept incomplete narratives when they serve us well, overlooking their logical gaps. Stained with gray stones and marked with yellow lines, it separates the chicken from the opposite field. Now my friends in Switzerland come to me asking me for advice and help, and I feel as if I am a vital member of our community. My close friend Akshay recently started stressing about whether his parents were going to get divorced. On a desk in the left corner, a framed picture of an Asian family is beaming their smiles, buried among US history textbooks and The Great Gatsby. A Korean ballad streams from a pair of tiny computer speakers. Pamphlets of American colleges are scattered about on the floor.
